Thomas was lead to believe that upon completing The Scorch Trials, he and his friends would receive the cure to the horrible Flare disease. Yet at the end of the second book, they discovered that their journey wasn't over. Now, unsure of who to trust and what to believe, Thomas must decide if he should listen to WICKED and help find a cure, or break out on his own, hoping to find some peace.
After being discouraged by the events in the second book and with the overall direction the Maze Runner trilogy was heading, I found The Death Cure a much more enjoyable read/listen for most of the book. While The Scorch Trials was filled with one horrible trial after another, The Death Cure didn't have that same feel. I enjoyed feeling like Thomas was no longer being manipulated and was finally determining his own future. The travels of Thomas's group were engrossing and not quite as gruesome as the previous book.
Being the final book, there are a few poignant goodbye scenes that packed an emotional punch and did effect me, even more so that I anticipated. In addition, the book does attempt to give meaning to the entire trilogy, although I for one was left unsatisfied. After it was all said and done, I was left wondering was it all worth it? Unfortunately, the answer was mostly no for me.
Overall, I liked The Death Cure more than the second book, but it still pales in comparison with The Maze Runner. The book and trilogy left me feeling unsatisfied with its ultimate results, and I feel like too much happened to Thomas without an appropriate payout. I think the end was meant to give the reader hope, but it was so sad in so many ways.
I did like the twists that were revealed in the very end. However, those reveals were in the epilogue and almost an after thought, which is a shame because I think I would have liked the story more had I known more throughout the book.
The narration by Mark Deakins was a highlight of the book. He did a marvelous job capturing the intense emotions of the story.
In the end, The Death Cure is a must read for those who have started the series.
