Tumbling in Time

Tumbling in Time - Denise L. Wyant My Rating: 3.5 Stars, B+ - liked it, recommend

Tumbling in Time is an enjoyable short story with exciting action. College coed, Tasha, can travel through time via the terrible tornados of the midwest planes. Her objective is to visit her beloved, Arikk the wizard. Although the book doesn't outline how it happens, the story implies that if she gets picked up by the storm, she will automatically be tossed into the place and time that Arikk currently occupies.

Arikk is a natural time traveler - able to open portals on his own. As a Peacekeeper, Arikk is bound to fight the demons that have overrun Earth in the distant future. He has feelings for Tasha, but not the time. If not for his mother continuing to interfere in his personal life, he'd spend his life all alone.

Tumbling in Time is fun. The concept of time travel via a tornado is reminiscent of The Wizard of Oz, but let me tell you - this ain't Kansas, or Oz! The future is not pretty - the demons are violent and powerful. The short story gives the reader just enough detail for one to realize life doesn't bode well for humans in the future.

The romance between Tasha and Arikk is just starting to pick up steam when the story ends. Tasha is determined to make Arikk realize he can have a relationship, even though Arikk is pretty determined that his feelings for Tasha stay buried. The pair still have a ways to go before they have a true romance.

The story ends on a cliffhanger, which makes Tumbling in Time feel more like the first chapters in a larger story. It's a snippet in the life of Tasha and Arikk, rather than their complete tale. Even with that, the novella is an enjoyable, quick read.
